SS SIMON AND JUDE; FEAST DAY 28th OCTOBER

SS SIMON AND JUDE

FEAST DAY 28th OCTOBER

St Jude is familiar to many Catholic children as the patron saint of “lost causes” – that saint to whom our mother told us she prayed when we were naughty. But there is more to this saint than impossible children: St Jude had a genealogy that was incredible: he was the nephew by his father Cleophas to St Joseph, and therefore the legal cousin to Christ Himself. He was also one who was privy to one of the profound moments in the Gospels: At the close of the Last Supper, Our Lord said: “He that loveth me, shall be loved of My Father: and I will love him and will manifest Myself to him.” Then Jude asked Him: “Lord, how is it that Thou wilt manifest Thyself to us and not to the world?” And he received from Christ this reply: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word and My Father will love him. And we will come to him and will make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my word. And the word which you have heard is not Mine, but the Father’s who sent me.”

Both Saint Simon and St Jude were martyred. St Jude was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Jesus Christ. St Simon is represented in art with a saw, the instrument of his martyrdom; catholicculture.org.
St Jude is represented with tools of the architect. He is the patron saint of forgotten and hopeless causes; hospitals and medicos and desperate situations.
Saint Simon is the patron saint of tanners and saw-men (probably because he was martyred by being sawn into pieces). His symbols include: Boat or fish; man being sawn in half longitudinally; sword and shield.
CUSTOMS
Traditionally Catholics started preparing food such as bread for the dead and soul cakes for the feast of All Souls on this day.
Today is a good time to buy ingredients for the food you will use on those feast days.
