THE ANNUNCIATION
25th MARCH
The Annunciation by Leonardo da Vinci and Andrea del Verrocchio (1472), Uffizi Gallery, Florence.
Today is the celebration of the Annunciation by the Angel Gabriel of the coming of the Saviour of the world – the Incarnation of Christ, made possible by Mary’s humility and complete acquiescence to God’s will.
The Gradual provides (Ps 44. 3,5):
Grace is poured abroad in thy lips; therefore hath God blessed thee for ever. Because of truth and meekness, and justice; and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully.
The Communion prayer is the prophecy of Isaiah 7. 14-15:
Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a Son, and His name shall be called Emmanuel.
First Vespers have the following Antiphons:
Ant 1 (Luke 1.26). The Angel Gabriel was sent to Mary, a Virgin espoused to Joseph.
2 (Luke 1.28). Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women.
3. (Luke 1.30). Fear not Mary, for thou hast found grace with the Lord; behold thou shalt conceive and bring forth a son.
4 (Luke 1.32). The Lord shall give unto Him the throne of His father David, and He shall reign for ever and ever.
5. (Luke 1.38). Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done unto me according to Thy word.
